Geranium
     ‘Rozanne’

Finally it’s here! That perfectly beautiful long-blooming perennial you’ve been looking for to add some serious punch to your garden this summer. Geranium ‘Rozanne’, the 2008 Perennial Plant of the Year is a dependable show stopper deserving of a prominent place in your planting scheme this season. A hybrid cross between Geranium himalayense and Geranium wallichianum, ‘Rozanne’ is a Cranesbill Geranium discovered in Somerset, England in the early 90s by Donald and Rozanne Waterer.

The saucer-shaped two and a half inch big violet blue flowers have a faintly white center with dark red veining. Its extended bloom time begins in early June and continues well into late November. ‘Rozanne’ will take part sun but performs best in full sun with moderate water and an organically rich neutral soil. The green foliage turns an appealing dark red in autumn, and is similar in appearance and habit as other Cranesbill Geranium, but typically leafs out a little later in the season. Height and spread is usually listed at 18-24”, but I have seen it spread as much as five feet across in optimal growing conditions. Because of its prolific flowering ‘Rozanne’ can also be utilized in containers, hanging baskets, and annual plantings.

Deer and rabbit proof, ‘Rozanne’ is relatively pest and maintenance free. A light shearing in mid to late summer will promote more blooms for the fall. Because it typically leafs out a little later than most Geraniums, I recommend inter-planting it with spring flowering bulbs. It also pairs well with ‘Hyperion’ and ‘Happy Returns’ Daylilies, ‘Moonbeam’ and ‘Crème Brulee’ Coreopsis, and ‘Endless Summer’ Hydrangea. For consistently glorious long-lasting color this summer, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is a must have for any perennial or mixed border.
